Friends of Europe ’s roundtable on the State of Europe will discuss the over-arching challenge of reconciling Europe’s politics of austerity with the need to restore growth, create jobs and tackle social inequality.

As governments slash budgets, Europe runs the risk of worsening the already wide “fairness gap” between people and nations. The question of how Europe can strike the right balance between budget cutbacks and growth will dominate the no-holds-barred debate attended by José Manuel Barroso, Herman Van Rompuy, EU Commissioners, MEPs and MPs as well as ministers and chaired by Friends of Europe President Viscount Étienne Davignon. Civil society representatives, business leaders, leading journalists will also participate.

The roundtable will be followed in the evening by our annual President's Dinner, which will welcome Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti as guest of honour.
