The Senior Officials Meeting is organised annually during the second semester by the Council Presidency, following the corresponding minesterial meeting that takes place during the first semester. The meeting is chaired by the respective Presidency with the participation of high officials representing the U.S and the E.U. During the afforementioned meeting, both sides will have the opportunity to exchange views and opinions through fruitful discussions regarding issues of common interest, aiming in further enhancement of their cooperation.

Van 1 juli tot en met 31 december 2012 vervulde Cyprus het voorzitterschap van de Europese Unie. Het Cypriotisch voorzitterschap werkte nauw samen met de vorige twee voorzitterschappen: Polen en Denemarken. Deze drie landen vormden samen een 'trojka' (of trio) van opeenvolgend voorzittende landen. Ze hadden samen een programma voor de hele periode opgesteld.
