It is tradition for the Member State holding the EU Presidency to host an Informal CVO Meeting. The focus of the meeting, which will be attended by the officials from the Member States, the Commission, the Candidate Member States and EEA Countries, is to discuss current animal health and welfare status and the common rules for safer food that are adhered to from farm to fork.

Van 1 juli tot en met 31 december 2012 vervulde Cyprus het voorzitterschap van de Europese Unie. Het Cypriotisch voorzitterschap werkte nauw samen met de vorige twee voorzitterschappen: Polen en Denemarken. Deze drie landen vormden samen een 'trojka' (of trio) van opeenvolgend voorzittende landen. Ze hadden samen een programma voor de hele periode opgesteld.
