Public Hearing - Larnaka, Cyprus
The Cypriot Presidency has invited the EESC to examine in an exploratory opinion the benefits for Island Member States of a macro-regional strategy for the Mediterranean. To date the Committee has argued that the very success of EU macro-regional strategies depends on engaging citizens and involving civil society in their implementation. The aim of the hearing in Larnaca is to collect practical inputs from representatives of civil society, local and regional authorities on what would constitute key elements of a successful macro-regional strategy in the Mediterranean, taking into account its specific maritime and geo-political setting. Subsequently, and based on the successful Baltic model, the EESC intends to develop a Mediterranean prototype for macro-regional cooperation, building on the various inputs received.
