The EU Treaty (Articles 170 and 174) underlines the need to pay special attentionto the situation of a number of specific territories, amongst them islands. The Islands Commissionof the Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions, which gathers representatives from the various European Island Regional authorities, will hold its annual conference in Cyprus. The purpose of this years conference, which will be held on the eve of the Informal Meeting of Ministers responsible for Cohesion Policy, will be to discuss how the 2014-2020 Cohesion Policy could, or should benefit islands.

Van 1 juli tot en met 31 december 2012 vervulde Cyprus het voorzitterschap van de Europese Unie. Het Cypriotisch voorzitterschap werkte nauw samen met de vorige twee voorzitterschappen: Polen en Denemarken. Deze drie landen vormden samen een 'trojka' (of trio) van opeenvolgend voorzittende landen. Ze hadden samen een programma voor de hele periode opgesteld.
