Mr Graham Blythe takes office as Head of the Office of the European Commission in Edinburgh on 1 August 2012.
Mr. Blythe joined the European Commission in 1993. He has been working in the Directorate General for Communication since 2008, specifically on the coordination of the Representations of the European Commission in the 27 Member States. He was Deputy Head of Unit and Acting Head of Unit responsible for France and Slovenia during the Member States' respective Presidencies in 2008. Mr. Blythe was also responsible for working with the Representations of the Commission in Estonia, Greece, Luxembourg, Poland and the United Kingdom. In 2011 he assisted with the opening of the Commission's Regional Representation in Wroclaw, Poland and most recently has dealt with strategic planning as regards work with the media and with the Spokesperson's Service of the European Commission. He has also worked in the Representation in Ireland and in the Directorate General for Research. Prior to joining the Commission, Mr. Blythe worked at the Universities of Bristol and Bradford. He is a graduate of the University of Aberdeen and was a postgraduate in Leeds and Nice. After graduating he worked as an intern at the Economic and Social Committee and at the European Commission's Delegation to the United Nations in New York.
Mr Blythe's rich and varied experience will enable the Commission's Representation in Edinburgh to play a key role in communicating with local citizens and the media, as well as enhance relations between the European Commission and the Scottish Government and Parliament, local authorities and other stakeholders.
Background
The Commission has Representations in all 27 EU Member States as well as Offices in Barcelona, Belfast, Bonn, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Marseille, Milan, Munich and Wroclaw. They inform the media and public about EU policies and report to the Commission on significant developments in the country.
