Spain wants to start working on a new Community directive on cross-border medical assistance, after the initial proposal from the European Commission (EC) was blocked last December, according to the Spanish Minister of Health, Trinidad Jiménez.

Spain wants the alternative proposal to improve the rights of Community nationals without being overly costly to the public health system.

The plan rejected by the Council in December included member states returning the price paid by resident Community nationals who decide to receive medical assistance in other European countries.

During its Presidency, Spain will attempt to obtain "a compromise solution" towards approving a directive that "fulfils the objectives of equity, solidarity, equality and cohesion", said the Minister.

Nevertheless, until the new European Health Commissioner starts to act "and comments on the matter", the Spanish Presidency "cannot make progress on this issue either", she pointed out.

Trinidad Jiménez's agenda for 12 January in Brussels includes meetings with her Belgium counterpart, Laurette Onkelinx, and organisations such as the European Anti-Poverty Network.
