Met dank overgenomen van Europese Commissie (EC), gepubliceerd op woensdag 8 juni 2011.

The source of the E-coli epidemic is not known. It is the Commission's main priority to end the sanitary crisis and restore consumer confidence.

In response to the economic impact that we have seen all across Europe, my priority as Commission for Agriculture is also to support vegetable producers as soon as possible. They need support now. I hope that this emergency plan will be accepted by the member states in the management committee next Tuesday (June 14). That will enable the first support to be cleared very quickly (in July).

Yesterday we examined the impact of the crisis with Ministers (in Luxembourg) and with experts from member state Ministries of Agriculture (in Brussels in the Management Committee). After these two meetings, I have decided to expand the emergency measures to include 2 other products - courgettes and sweet peppers - as well as cucumbers, tomatoes and lettuce.

I have also decided to increase the level of compensation, which will be 50% of the usual seasonal price for the products concerned for all producers whether or not they are members of producer organisations.

In addition, producers who are members of producer organisations have access to other mechanisms (through operational programmes), which will allow them to have up to 70% (EU-funded) compensation.

In total, we will have a budget envelope of 210 million euros available. This envelope will allow a response to demands for compensation for the period from May 26 to June 30. We will then see where we are.

These funds will be accessible for all producers, administered through producer organisations or national paying agencies if member states prefer.

We are doing the maximum within the financial possibilities available to us and with the tools at our disposal today.

It is true that we are not sufficiently equipped to respond to this type of crisis. We need to take this into account within the framework of the reform of the Common Agriculture Policy.
