INFORMATION FOR THE PRESS
European Council - Council of the European Union Open Day on Saturday 12 May from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
In collaboration with the other EU institutions in Brussels, the European Council and the Council of the European Union organise an Open Day on Saturday 12 May in the Justus Lipsius building at Rue de la Loi 175, Brussels, home to these two European institutions. The Open Day offers visitors an opportunity to gain a better understanding of the way the European Council and the Council of the EU function, and to see the places where decisions which concern all Europe's citizens are taken
This Open Day is organised each year around the time of the anniversary of the Schuman Declaration of 9 May 1950
Guests can start their visit with a 10-minute film on the European Council "backstage"
Guided tours of the building from 10 a.m to 5.15 p.m. (start of the last guided tour) Guided by members of staff, you can visit the rooms where the Heads of State and government ministers of the 27 Member States meet for summits and Council meetings. Tours are organised throughout the day in French, Dutch, German and English
Herman Van Rompuy, President of the European Council, will meet the public and visit the stands between 15.00 and 16.00
Other features this year include:

•A public debate on "Governance of the euro area" from 4.30 p.m

•30 information stands will illustrate the work of the General Secretariat of the Council, the European Union's global presence with its military and civilian missions as well as several EU agencies contributing to the safety of European citizens

•The current Danish Presidency of the Council of the EU will be taking part with a stand focused on the environment, while the future Cypriot Presidency will highlight island tourism
-
•Several stands will offer quizzes which are sure to have many lucky winners. Publications providing general information will be available and the exhibitors at the stands will be glad to answer your questions
A free shuttle service between European institutions will be available, enabling visitors to participate in all the Open Day events in the European quarter of Brussels
