This Informal Competitiveness Council (Research) will bring together Research Ministers from EU member-states and European Free Trade Area (EFTA) countries, to discuss issues of common concern about simplification and funding models in research programmes, as well as for the promotion of the EuroMediterranean cooperation in research and innovation.

De raadsformatie Concurrentievermogen bestaat over het algemeen uit de ministers (of staatssecretarissen) van economische zaken van de lidstaten van de Europese Unie. De raad Concurrentievermogen vergadert vijf tot zes keer per jaar, afhankelijk van de urgentie van de te behandelen onderwerpen (interne markt, toerisme, industrie, onderzoek en ruimtevaart).
