In the context of this year's 14th Pafos Aphrodite Festival, the renowned Opera of the Slovak National Theatre is presenting Giuseppe Verdi's popular opera "Otello". This tragic opera is based on William Shakespeare's play "Othello". This opera was chosen because of its connection to the history of Cyprus since the story takes place at the Castle of Famagusta.

Van 1 juli tot en met 31 december 2012 vervulde Cyprus het voorzitterschap van de Europese Unie. Het Cypriotisch voorzitterschap werkte nauw samen met de vorige twee voorzitterschappen: Polen en Denemarken. Deze drie landen vormden samen een 'trojka' (of trio) van opeenvolgend voorzittende landen. Ze hadden samen een programma voor de hele periode opgesteld.
