The orchestral programme which includes Beethoven's 9th Symphony juxtaposes, in a symbolic way, the devastation of war in Europe's past with the brotherhood of nations and the hopeful future which is developing within the EU.

Van 1 juli tot en met 31 december 2012 vervulde Cyprus het voorzitterschap van de Europese Unie. Het Cypriotisch voorzitterschap werkte nauw samen met de vorige twee voorzitterschappen: Polen en Denemarken. Deze drie landen vormden samen een 'trojka' (of trio) van opeenvolgend voorzittende landen. Ze hadden samen een programma voor de hele periode opgesteld.
