EDAS: satellietnavigatie betrouwbaarder en doeltreffender maken voor commerciële toepassingen (en) - Hoofdinhoud
European Data Access Service (EDAS) - a new service of the European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS) - is designed to make satellite navigation in Europe more reliable and thus more effective for use by commercial applications, which will help companies develop more advanced products. EDAS will support new services in a number of different sectors such as agriculture, transport and mapping. This memo provides some examples of such new products and services. Many more applications are possible and companies are encouraged to develop new products and services with the help of the free European Union EDAS service.
Avoiding car crashes
Road safety is a major concern and social issue. In 2007, road accidents killed over 40,000 people and injured more than 1.2 million. ERSEC developed a measuring system to help drivers avoid collisions. It is used on board vehicles, to output the position on the road map of the equipped vehicle and of all the obstacles (such as other vehicles, peoples and any kind of fixed or mobile objects) around it with a measurement accuracy of the order of 0.1 metre at a sampling rate of 100 Hz.

Navigation for visually and motor impaired people
There are more than 13 million visually impaired people in Europe. They encounter serious difficulties in moving around and, until recently, relied mainly on aids such as on canes and guidedogs to travel more confidently in unfamiliar environments. PERNASVIP aims to develop a GNSS-based mobility service to help visually disabled pedestrians in the urban environment, which meets the 4m level of accuracy and reliability they need for improving their day-to-day life autonomy.

Transporting dangerous goods
The use of GNSS technologies in the freight transport market has grown considerably in recent years and a number of best practices based on GPS combined with sensors and wireless devices and adopted at national or European levels, are now operational. ENI, an international Italian oil company, is using EGNOS Open Service to monitor its fleet of more than 1,000 vehicles for the safe transportation of hydrocarbon via road and intermodal nodes in Italy. SCUTUM will enhance the ENI monitoring system to use EGNOS Commercial Service. Transporting dangerous goods is among the most promising and ready application for EGNOS.

Tracking vulnerable people
The objective of the Liveline project is to develop a commercial and secure location sharing service for vulnerable people, based on EGNOS/EDAS. A vulnerable person is somebody whose unexpected absence creates high level of concern and anxiety at the side of his or her close relatives and caretakers, as they may not be able to find their way back home and easily become victims of accidents or crime. Liveline focuses on vulnerable people in a family context, e.g. children and elderly people. Tracking a vulnerable person’s position saves critical search time, takes away unnecessary worries and reduces unnecessary police interventions.

Assisting farmers to improve efficiency
Modern agriculture requires high precision farming tools to organize the joint work on a field and the transportation of agriculture goods. Today’s agriculture faces the barrier of information islands when organizing to have different machines work together. At present, there is no solution to organize and optimize the work of a whole fleet. GeoPal provides an advanced logistics system for the harvesting and distribution functions of the bio-production related supply chains. The software will include in-field route planning modules for harvesting machines and transport units. The system assists European farmers to improve the efficiency during the in-field and inter-field logistic activities such as harvesting, distribution and the bio-production (biomass and agri-food) supply chains.

Smart logistics - Seamless and robust positioning applications
Currently most transport companies, e.g. freight forwarding businesses, rely on a variety of different positioning or telematic systems. No more than 10% of the currently used and tested positioning systems include position surveillance for the vehicles, e.g. semi-trailers or swap bodies. However, since a significant number of trailers are lost every year, the demand for a positioning solution for this means of transport is apparent. GALAPAGOS developed a positioning system that can be used within the scope of logistics applications, e.g. for container tracking. The GALAPAGOS positioning core is based on high sensitivity GNSS receivers augmented by EGNOS/EDAS and assisted data. Additional positioning technologies such as GSM and WLAN are incorporated to improve continuity and availability of the positioning information in complex environments.

Clever salt-spreading in winter times
The most common winter services are mainly salt spreading (throughout the season) and snow ploughs (in the case of snowfall); the most commonly used de-icing substance is sodium chloride (NaCl). However, all types of services and de-icing strategies are becoming more and more demanding in terms of requirement. Salt-spreading is in fact strictly related to road safety due to the environmental impact (more salt means damage to the environment) and social costs (salt is becoming quite expensive). Heavy snow events and major sub-zero temperatures Europe-wide have amplified such problems connected to roads and highway management. GOLDEN-ICE aims at exploiting the EGNOS innovations in the field of winter services equipments (professional trucks and vehicles) with the objective to introduce advanced automation and safety controls in relation to salt spreading control, road safety and emergency services.

Flexible charging of road users
Roads across Europe are becoming more congested and it is widely recognised that the network needs to be more effectively managed. One tool to tackle this challenge is road-user charging (RUC). RUC has the potential to reduce congestion, lower vehicle emissions and generate revenue streams for infrastructure improvement. It can ensure that revenues are based on actual road usage creating a financial incentive for changing driving behaviour. This might include less use of private cars and, in particular, reducing peak-times traffic levels in urban areas by spreading out the morning and evening ‘rush hour’. The principal objective of SIGNATURE is to prototype a GNSS based solution for flexible road user charging which provides a highly reliable solution in a cost-effective and scalable manner. It demonstrates that a robust solution can be based upon low-cost GNSS components, provided the end-to-end service is intelligently designed. The overarching scientific and technical objective of the project is to prototype the necessary algorithms, products, services and processes that will provide the required levels of confidence in adopting a GNSS solution for Electronic Fee Collection.

Road construction
Asphalt road construction relies to a great extent on the ability of the construction worker to optimally manage truck fleets, operate the paver, and steer the compactor. Any sub-optimal operation within this chain may lead to a reduction in road quality, resulting in cost-intensive reconstruction or decreased life time. Constant monitoring and control of parameters is significant for the quality and durability of the road. ASPHALT offers high precision applications in road construction and fleet management and logistics as part of a just-in-time process chain, and is expected to be early adopters of both EGNOS and Galileo, in an important professional high value EU market with significant public benefits. The main goal is to explore the entire process chain and, with the intensive use of GNSS positioning data, improving each sub-process responsible for the road quality.

Surveying costal water depth
The accuracy of nautical charts is highly dependent upon accurate surveys being carried out, and as the sea bed is often soft sand or mud that moves with time, these need to be repeated periodically. Unfortunately, due to limited budgets, hydrographic offices often concentrate on the main routes for large commercial shipping, which means that many coastal areas that are frequented by leisure and small commercial craft are inadequately surveyed. This results in a greater likelihood of damage to vessels, injuries and pollution due to vessels running aground. The lack of up-to-date survey data also impacts other areas, such as the monitoring of silting or movements of the sea bed and the availability of data for engineering projects, such as outfalls, or offshore tidal or wind energy schemes. CoSuDEC will create a system for enhanced surveying of coastal waters through using standard navigation equipment, as an alternative to the traditional approach of using specialist Hydrographic surveyors and high precision instruments.
