DEN HAAG (PDC) -  On April 12-14, the United Nations held its first ever public auditions for the post of UN Secretary General. Candidates gave a two hour presentation, and were then examined by members of the General Assembly and several civil society organisations that sent pre-recorded videos. The candidates answered questions on how they would deal with climate change and conflict prevention and resolution. The sessions were streamed live on UN web TV.

Irina Bokova, from Bulgaria, is a leading candidate to be the successor of Ban Ki-moon. In her remarks, Bokova stressed she would take a firm stand on human rights: 'The secretary general has a moral authority and a stand to advocate and to talk to world leaders. I think this is an important responsibility.'

Bokova is the keynote speaker for the Europe Lecture in The Hague. Theme of this lecture is 'Protecting cultural heritage in times of conflict' and will take place at the Kloosterkerk in The Hague, the Netherlands.
