Since 2010, the Dahrendorf Forum has researched and debated central issues affecting the future of Europe as a liberal order, ranging from climate change to democratic renewal or the EU´s institutional design. The Forum is pleased to collaborate with CEPS in putting on this event.

The conference will focus on three critical topics that have assumed greater relevance in recent years, each of which has been examined in the last cycle of Dahrendorf Forum research:

  • The integration of migrants into labour markets and host societies and the contested nature of current approaches; what could be possible ways forward?
  • The role of journalists, and the media more generally, in confronting populist rhetoric; what are the lessons learned, and what can be done to restore and maintain quality journalism in a context in which social media have fundamentally changed the game?
  • Europe´s role in the world as it is being “sandwiched” between a retreating United States and an increasingly assertive China; will Europe start using its powers more, and “punch at its weight”? Can it rise to the challenge, articulated in the political guidelines for the incoming Commission from Ursula von der Leyen, who believes “Europe should have a stronger and more united voice in the world”?

Each topic will be addressed in separate panels led by experienced moderators and with leading experts as contributors.

In addition, there will be a session in which a prominent EU figure will be “in conversation”, offering views on how the EU should tackle certain tricky issues.

The Dahrendorf Forum is a joint initiative by the Hertie School in Berlin and the London School of Economics and Political Science, funded by Stiftung Mercator.
