Budget Cut Puts the Montesquieu Institute in Danger

The proposal made on 30 May by the Dutch Minister of Education, Culture and Science to cut away the budget of the Montesquieu Institute puts the continuity of this institute in serious danger.

Since its establishment the Montesquieu Institute has significantly contributed to the development of an international platform for comparative research on representative democracy and responsiveness of political institutions within and outside the European Union. The institute has organized and facilitated numerous activities for bringing international researchers together and stimulated innovative political analysis.

We are convinced of the added value of the Montesquieu Institute in building an international research network and in sparking debate on the functioning of political institutions in the EU. For these reasons we would deeply regret if, due to the proposed budget cut, the Montesquieu Institute no longer is able to continue its activities.
