The Hague - On the 13th of June, the Europe Lecture will take place in The Hague. UNESCO's Director-General Irina Bokova will be the keynote speaker of the Europe Lecture. The theme of the Lecture is 'Europe in the world: protecting cultural heritage in times of conflict'.

Cultural heritage is often object and subject of conflict. The destruction of cultural heritage is also a security concern. The illicit trade of cultural property is a major source of income for many armed groups and in many instances carried out to finance acts of terrorism. What is the importance and meaning of the European Union as a guardian of cultural heritage?

Irina Bokova has been the (first female) Director-General of UNESCO since 2009. Given this position, one of her main priorities is to enable the International Criminal Court in The Hague to bring legal charges against terrorists for the destruction of cultural heritage. Bokova is nominated as the official candidate for the next U.N. Secretary-General.
